Ferrangamos shoes are among the best-selling brands in the US, selling more than 30 million pairs in a year.
But the footwear giant was recently accused of sexual harassment by a former employee who claims the company had told her to “be careful what you ask for” and threatened to quit if she asked for help in working out her own weight.
The woman, who did not want to be identified, told Al Jazeera that she first became involved in the company in 2012 and had to resign from her job to make way for a new employee, who she said had been treated worse than the former employee.
The former employee alleged that she was fired for trying to take a vacation in her state and had been asked to work out the weights of the company’s employees, among other tasks, and that she received inappropriate text messages about her weight and was told to keep her weight in check.
The women said they have filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which said it was investigating the allegations.
The complaint said the former Ferrangeamos employee was given the task of looking after the company weight desk and that her supervisors made comments to her about her body.
The EEOC complaint also alleged that Ferrangaamos did not adequately train employees about how to conduct themselves in a workplace where sexual harassment can occur, and it said that the company failed to respond to numerous sexual harassment complaints in a timely manner.

The company denied all of the allegations and said it has taken steps to improve its policies and processes.
Ferraganos, which is based in New York City, has more than 1,500 stores worldwide.
In response to the complaint, the company issued a statement on its website, saying: “Ferrangamas shoes have been designed for our customers to fit them every time.
They are made of high quality materials that are comfortable to wear, durable and stylish.
We are deeply sorry for any harm this allegation may have caused.”
The company also said it would investigate the matter.
“We are very committed to protecting all of our employees from the type of conduct that was alleged against us,” the statement said.
“Fermagamo does not tolerate harassment of any kind and has a zero-tolerance policy for sexual harassment and sexual assault.
We will conduct an independent investigation of the claims against us and take appropriate actions in response to any violations of our Code of Conduct.”
The Fermagamoss company is part of a category of American companies that includes Levi Strauss and Under Armour.
It is not the first time a female former employee has come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct by a company.
A former employee at Nike told the BBC in 2016 that she worked for the company for eight years, but that she left in 2014.
The BBC has also heard claims that at Nike, male employees have been accused of forcing female employees to perform sexual acts, such as kissing and touching, while at the same time working at the company.
“I was there for years and I have never seen any sexual harassment of a woman,” one female former Nike employee told the network.
In an interview with the BBC, former CEO Michael Boggs said he has “zero tolerance” for harassment of women.
“There is no tolerance for sexual assault,” he said.
Nike said it had taken “aggressive and decisive action” to address the allegations, but would not comment further.
The United States has seen a spike in the number of sexual assaults on college campuses and other campuses across the country since the election of Donald Trump as president.
According to a recent survey from the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network, more than 2,500 people reported sexual assault to the US Department of Education.
In the last month alone, the number has increased by an average of 19% compared to last year, according to the survey.

“These are the people that we want to protect and we want them to do their jobs,” Trump said during a speech in Philadelphia.
“And I think this is a very sad day for our country.”
